Photo by Wolf LeathersĪ more whimsical example below the median price would be the large Hard Pastel Animal Hybrids made by painter Ann Solyst. A practical work of art closer to the median price was the $270 Signature Leather Tote Bag made by Wolf Leathers. The highest-priced masterpiece reached a staggering $9,200 for a large handcrafted wood furniture piece. Notably, one jewelers most expensive item was a $25 piece of jewelry. However, to increase your chances of securing such a masterpiece, it is advisable to set aside approximately $1,500. In other words, if you come across a masterpiece that deeply resonates with you, there is a 50% chance that its price will be $300 or less. ![]() The numbers reveal that the median price for such a remarkable piece is $300. While we have discussed the price range for a great piece of art, let's now turn our attention to the ultimate and most expensive masterpiece-an artwork that truly captures the artist's attention, time, and devotion. Photos by Iconic Quilling, The Knotty Elm, and Tonya C What should I expect to pay for the ultimate work of art? This included paper quilled loons by Iconic Quilling, state outline inlayed cutting boards by The Knotty Elm, and even a nod to the beloved musician, Prince made by painter Tonya C. Photo by Stanley LeonardĪdditionally, approximately 10% of popular items featured symbols representing Minnesota. A good example of this was the $40 8x8 Swedish Fish Print offered by printmaker Stanley Leonard. Notably, 71% of the time, these items were small enough to fit in a backpack, indicating their portability as a desirable trait for customers. I also discovered interesting patterns regarding the size and themes of artists' popular items. For those with a $40 budget, there is only a 50% chance of acquiring such an item. As a general strategy, if you budget around $150, you have an 80% chance of being able to purchase one of popular items. It is worth noting that I did not gather data on the actual number of units sold for these popular items. The least expensive popular item was a four-dollar sticker, while the most expensive popular item was a remarkable natural wood and hand-poured iron furniture piece by Wettrock Co priced at $9,000. This implies that the typical hot item at the fair falls within the 30-40 dollar range. ![]() To understand the price range of popular items, it is crucial to examine the cost of an artist's most sought-after piece.Īpproximately half of the artists priced their best-selling item below forty dollars, with the most commonly reported price being thirty dollars. What should I expect to pay for a great piece of art? One particularly impressive counter was jeweler Anna Emerson who brought exactly 439 pairs of her brass and epoxy resin earrings to the festival. Surprisingly, only a handful of artists were able to provide an exact count of the pieces they brought. The number of pieces varied significantly depending on the type of art, with jewelers and painters with abundant reprints bringing the most, while furniture makers and specialized painters brought comparatively fewer pieces. In contrast, another artist had around 2,500 pieces of jewelry available, mostly not on display. Kristin Williams, a fiber artist who specializes in custom three-dimensional needle felted portraits, brought only eight pieces. On average, artists typically brought between 150 and 200 pieces, although there were a few notable exceptions. This encompassed a wide range of items, including reprints, stickers, and medium-sized handmade pieces.ĭelving into the data, around half of the artists brought more than 150 pieces, with the most frequently reported amount being around 200. How much art did the artists bring?ĭuring the festival, the artists I surveyed brought an astonishing total of approximately 27,300 art pieces. By learning this, artists and customers can plan for a great experience at the fair and other similar events. In this article, I share the key findings that can help answer common questions about the art fair. By collecting responses from over 90 artists, I gained valuable insights into the quantity of art they brought, the prices of their popular pieces, and much more. As a data scientist with a background in design, I seized the opportunity to conduct a survey among the talented artists showcasing their work. ![]() This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Stone Arch Bridge Festival in Minneapolis, a vibrant event known for its two-day art fair. ![]()
